Honda’s CUV e: EV Scooter Lands In Europe

Many of the recent innovations in electric two-wheelers have come from relatively new entrants that were largely unknown before. Unfortunately, several of these companies have had to shut down due to various financial challenges.

One commonality among these companies was the tendency to aim too high. Brands like Sondors and Fuell introduced advanced and futuristic two-wheelers that attempted to fulfill too many functions at once. Additionally, their lack of experience in the motorcycle industry did not work in their favor.

However, we are now witnessing established brands entering the electric market with significant momentum. Kawasaki has already made strides with its Z and Ninja E-1, and Honda has debuted the CUV e:, a straightforward, no-nonsense electric scooter.

Honda has been in the spotlight lately regarding its electric initiatives. At EICMA, the company showcased two EV motorcycle concepts and shortly after announced a substantial investment in solid-state battery technology. Meanwhile, Honda’s Mobile Power Pack e: has demonstrated its flexibility across Europe and Japan, powering various applications including construction equipment, light electric vehicles, and electric tourist boats.

Recently, Honda introduced the CUV e: in Europe, which I believe could potentially revolutionize the market.

Why do I think this? Because it’s uncomplicated. The CUV e: is designed to be a straightforward, functional scooter that efficiently transports you from one location to another. It embodies everything that people appreciate about scooters while simply being electric.

It features a flat floorboard for storage, a comfortable seating arrangement, a front storage compartment, and the option to add useful accessories like a top case, luggage rack, and windscreen. While it incorporates connectivity technology such as Honda’s RoadSync and built-in navigation, it doesn’t overwhelm users with excessive tech for tech’s sake. Importantly, it utilizes a reliable powertrain that highlights the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: once more.

In the midst of the tumultuous developments in the electric motorcycle sector, the Honda CUV e: certainly feels like a refreshing option. Being created by one of the most reputable manufacturers globally adds to its appeal. Personally, if I were given the choice between a Honda EV scooter and a Chinese imitation EV scooter, I would undoubtedly select the Honda, even if it were priced twice as high as the Chinese alternative.

Therefore, Honda’s pricing strategy will be a critical element in determining the model’s potential success. Nonetheless, Honda has a track record of producing value-oriented two-wheelers, and it’s likely the CUV e:’s price will reflect that reputation as well.

Visually, the CUV e: closely resembles the concept vehicle but is distinct from the petrol-powered Activa. It showcases a sleek and minimalist design, featuring a wide headlight on the front apron, flush-fitting footrests for passengers, and a streamlined taillight bar. This upcoming electric scooter will be fitted with two removable battery packs, which will limit storage capacity.

According to the media release, Honda asserts the CUV e: will provide a range of 70 km on a single charge with its dual battery packs. The performance of this electric scooter is claimed to be on par with a 125cc internal combustion engine scooter. Regarding features, the CUV includes a 7-inch TFT display, connected functionalities, keyless start, full LED lighting, a USB-C socket, three riding modes, and reverse assist. Honda will also provide the Honda RoadSync Duo app for connectivity options.

Will the Honda CUV e: become the new Activa Electric?

Considering the specifications and available features, it seems unlikely that the CUV e: concept will transform into the production-spec Activa Electric. The battery-powered Activa is expected to have a more straightforward design and will probably be built upon the existing petrol Activa model to keep costs manageable. Furthermore, Honda is unlikely to include such a lengthy list of features in the Activa Electric, as doing so could significantly increase expenses.

To ensure cost efficiency, Honda is likely to employ the same structure and body panels as the regular Activa for the forthcoming electric scooter. More information regarding the upcoming Activa Electric will be disclosed when the scooter makes its debut later this month.

The CUV e: is an advanced scooter designed for contemporary commuters. It utilizes two Honda Mobile Power Pack e: units to drive its 6kW E-Drive side motor, reaching a maximum speed of 83km/h and offering a range exceeding 70km (based on Honda’s internal tests), along with a Reverse Assist feature. Charging from empty to full takes 6 hours, and from 0 to 75% it only requires 3 hours; the custom charging dock allows users to recharge in the convenience of their own homes. Additionally, the CUV e: features a five-inch TFT screen, or a connected seven-inch TFT display filled with EV-specific data, navigation, and more, through the new Honda RoadSync Duo interface. Other specifications include full LED lighting, a USB-C socket, under-seat storage, and Smart Key functionality.

Following the launch of the EM1 e: electric moped for the 23-year model, the CUV e: marks Honda’s second electric two-wheeler available to customers in Europe. This model is part of Honda’s initiative to introduce at least 10 new electric two-wheelers globally by 2025, contributing towards a long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its motorcycle range by the 2040s.

The CUV designation has been associated with Honda vehicles before – specifically 30 years ago. The original CUV ES – Clean Urban Vehicle Electric Scooter – was exclusively available in the Japanese market and introduced in 1994. The CUV e: is designed to be a Clean Urban Vehicle suitable for today’s needs.

Whereas the EM1 e: is ideal for quick trips to college, the CUV e: offers significantly more mature capabilities, boasting smooth acceleration and a top speed comparable to that of a 125cc Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) scooter.

As local laws surrounding urban parking in various European cities evolve, the landscape of urban mobility is shifting – and the CUV e: is the ideal choice for those early-adopter commuters eager to switch from traditional scooters or to try riding on two wheels for the first time.

With its appealing design, comprehensive features, and full connectivity, the CUV e: stays ahead of the trend. While it clearly represents an electric vehicle, it also maintains the practicality and utility of a full-size Honda scooter.

The heart of the CUV e: consists of dual, swappable 48V/1.3kW Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries, which power the 6kW E-Drive side motor. It reaches a maximum speed of 83km/h and has a range exceeding 70km*, while the Reverse Assist feature simplifies parking in tight spots. Riders can select from three modes – SPORT, STANDARD, and ECON – each providing varying performance levels that affect the overall range.

Featuring a sleek, modern aesthetic, the design is straightforward and includes a flat floor. All lights use premium LED technology. There’s a small pocket in the fairing, under-seat storage for waterproof gear, and a USB-C charging port. The base model offers a five-inch TFT display, while the Roadsync Duo version comes equipped with a fully connected seven-inch TFT that provides navigation, numerous other functionalities, and EV-specific data regarding routes and charging options. Motorcycle usage is facilitated through a convenient Smart Key.

The structure includes a steel underbone frame, 31mm telescopic forks, and twin rear shocks, combined with 12-inch wheels and disc/drum brake systems. A rear carrier is incorporated into the specifications.

Similar to the EM1 e:, the CUV e:, along with the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: and charger, will be accessible through a choice of leasing, rental, purchase, or subscription options, depending on the country.

Available genuine Honda accessories include Smart Key/conventional Top Boxes, Screens, and Knuckle Guards.

The 25YM CUV e: will come in the following color choices:

– Pearl Jubilee White
– Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic
– Premium Silver Metallic

Battery & Charger

The E-Drive side motor (up to 6 kW) powers the rear wheel through a low-maintenance gear drive. The CUV e: is driven by two 48V Honda Mobile Power Pack e: lithium-ion batteries, produced in-house by Honda, which share the same commitment to durability, reliability, and quality that its internal combustion engines have long been recognized for.

The CUV e: is also capable of ascending a 13° slope from a standstill while carrying a passenger and 30kg of luggage. Reverse Assist simplifies entering or exiting a garage and aids in maneuvering into compact parking spots in urban environments.

The Honda Mobile Power Pack e: consists of swappable units that can be easily detached from the CUV e: for convenient charging at home. The operation is straightforward: the charger, equipped with an air-cooling fan, connects to a single-phase AC100-240V household source and delivers a maximum output of 270W.

Charging status is displayed through LED indicators in four segments. The Honda Mobile Power Pack e: has an approximate weight of 10kg, making it easy to carry and replace due to its comfortable handle. It is engineered to endure various temperatures, humidity levels, shocks, and vibrations.

Charging from zero to full takes about 6 hours; however, reaching 75% charge requires only 3 hours. Thanks to Honda’s renowned durability, the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: can be recharged over 2,500 times under internal testing conditions.

Design & Features

The CUV e: is quintessentially a Honda scooter, yet it also functions as an EV. It features a sleek, minimalist design that highlights its modernity while maintaining a classic silhouette enhanced by contemporary details. Full LED lighting adds a premium flair, complemented by a flat floor space (210mm deep) that facilitates easy access and additional storage.

An inner pocket in the front fairing provides convenience, along with a USB-C socket and storage for waterproof gear beneath the seat. A rear carrier and passenger grab rail come standard on the model. The five-inch TFT display is specifically designed for the CUV e: and is included as standard on the base model. The more advanced variant boasts a seven-inch screen that offers a rich, engaging experience while minimizing distractions, featuring turn-by-turn EV-specific navigation, music controls, and call management.

To alleviate travel stress, the new Honda RoadSync Duo interface offers smart weather updates, information on nearby charging stations, safety notifications, theft protection, and real-time tracking. An appealing feature from Honda’s premium scooter range is the Smart Key system; riders simply need to keep the Smart Key in their pocket to operate the vehicle.

Chassis

Engineered for lightness, agility, and user-friendliness for all skill levels, the CUV e: showcases Honda’s extensive experience. The seat height is a manageable 766mm, with a floor height of 270mm. A simple steel underbone mainframe provides fundamental strength.

The wheelbase measures 1310mm, with a rake and trail of 26°/79mm; overall dimensions closely resemble those of an SH Mode 125. The turning radius is a practical 1.9m, paired with a ground clearance of 210mm. The service weight of the CUV e: is 120kg. It is equipped with 31mm telescopic forks and twin rear shock absorbers. The wheels measure 12 inches in both the front and rear. Braking is facilitated by a front 190mm disc with a single-piston caliper and a 110mm rear drum, linked through the Combined Braking System (CBS). Engaging the rear brake activates CBS, distributing braking power to the front caliper.

Honda RoadSync Duo

The Honda RoadSync Duo® represents a pioneering service making its European launch on the CUV e:. This system connects the vehicle and smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing users to access navigation, hands-free calls, and music playback. Control through the left handlebar switch ensures that users stay focused on the road.

The navigation function alleviates concerns about traveling on an electric motorcycle by determining if the remaining battery is sufficient to reach the destination and suggesting optimal route guidance if the trip is feasible.

In addition, hands-free calls and music playback are efficiently managed, with the display showcasing the caller’s name, song title, and artist, thus offering enhanced convenience.

Moreover, depending on the vehicle’s riding mode (Standard, Eco, Sport), the color of the TFT display adjusts, enriching the riding experience with a more dynamic display.

The standout benefit of Honda RoadSync Duo® is its ability to evolve even after purchase. Through over-the-air software updates, riders will have continuous access to the latest features.
